Effective Banner Design Tips

4x12 Banner; GoBigBanners; Readable Banners

Good banner design makes the difference between a successful banner campaign vs one that produces zero results.  There is a tendency to put as much information on your banner as you can possibly fit because after all, you are paying for the banner and you want to get the most for your money.  In reality, the opposite is true.

The more concise and easy to read, the more effective your banner will be in promoting your event or business.  The Brookdale banner example includes three important elements presented in a very easy to read font and color combination.
  1. Logo: Brookdale Sunrise Creek
  2. What they offer: Senior Living Solutions
  3. Contact info: Phone number & Web address
This banner is sized at 4' x 12' and is placed in a 35 mph residential area.  The phone number and web address will most likely be read after someone pulls over to take a closer look at the housing development.  In other words, drivers are not likely to call the number or navigate to the web address without stopping.  It's best to think about your own driving habits as you decide what information to include on your banner.  Consider what banners catch your eye and which ones don't.

We encourage you to consider the following factors when deciding what information to include on your banner.
  1. Will your banner be viewed by pedestrians or from within a vehicle?
  2. If your banner will be read by drivers, the need for simplification becomes even more important.
  3. What is the drive by speed?
  4. What is the distance from the road?
  5. How busy is the highway or intersection where the banner will be placed?
  6. What other signage will your banner be competing with?
  7. How large can your banner be?
  8. Will your banner size and location comply with your local sign code?
  9. How will your banner be installed?
This ConEx banner is approximately 75' to 85' off of a primary highway with a 65 MPH speed limit.  We intentionally designed the banner with high contrast colors, simple wording and a simple font.  The focus is "Equipment Rentals".  The message reads a little odd because "Heavy" is separated from Equipment but we were constrained by the existing frame size.  When driving at 65 MPH, you can easily read this banner.
